Backsplashes are a necessary addition to any Kansas City bathroom and kitchen because they protect the wall behind a sink or stove from damage caused by water or grease. Backsplashes are made from a variety of materials including granite, marble, glass, or stainless steel, and oftentimes windows or mirrors also serve as backsplashes. Commonly though, backsplashes are made of tile because it’s both aesthetically appealing and easy to clean. Three tile varieties used to make backsplashes are ceramic, travertine, and subway. All three have distinct advantages and disadvantages that are discussed below.
Ceramic Tile Backsplash
This backsplash material comes in a variety of colors, a major reason for its popularity. Unlike travertine, ceramic tiles offer a great deal of design versatility. Frequently, backsplashes are a relatively unassuming component of kitchens or bathrooms, but the color options provided by ceramic allows homeowners to feature their backsplash as a more primary point of decoration. A downside of ceramic tile is its proneness to chips and cracks, something homeowners should be aware of.
Travertine Tile Backsplash
Travertine tiles are a popular backsplash material due to their durability. Made from limestone, they maintain a cream or white color that offers underscored detail and elegance when finishing any bathroom or kitchen. Unfortunately, this type of tile is prone to scratching, but does hold up well against chips and cracks.
Subway Tile Backsplash
Interestingly, subway tiles were first used in New York City’s subway stations starting in the 1990’s, hence their name. They are a style of ceramic that has become increasingly popular within bathrooms and kitchens, and are often used to make backsplashes. Known for their rectangular shape, subway tiles are available in a variety of tones and shades. Their major downside, like all ceramic tile varieties, is their tendency to chip or crack.
