Here at Floor Coverings International KC South, we understand that redesigning a single room let alone an entire home is an incredibly daunting task. For that reason, we reached out to local interior designer Teresa Sicks to talk to us about her advice when it comes to home design. Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I began Aberdeen Interiors 5 years ago. It was the realization of a passion and is an outlet for the gift and desire I have to help others achieve the living spaces they dream of for their homes. My business has succeeded and grown as great clients have continued to refer me to others. I was born and raised in Kansas City and am a bit of a cowgirl at heart. My husband and I stay busy with our large family and keeping up with all their activities.
What is the benefit of hiring an interior designer rather than making it a DIY project?
I encourage anyone thinking of a project in his or her home to seek out design help. The biggest benefit in doing so is having someone who can see a project as a whole and visualize the finished product, yet still break it down into the necessary pieces. A designer can assist you in planning your space, guide you in sourcing the necessary items or people, and help you prioritize each step of your project so it progresses smoothly to completion. By drawing on the experience of a pro, there will be fewer mistakes along the way and money will be spent wisely in order to make a homeowners vision a reality.
What advice do you have for homeowners considering redesigning their homes?
I would advise any homeowner considering a project to spend some time on Houzz and Pinterest. As they look through the photos and save the things that appeal to them, they will discover a pattern and it will help guide them to their “style.” They can then use those pictures to communicate with a designer. This is proving to be the most effective way for a client to communicate with a designer and for a designer to help a client visualize what must sometimes seem like “design speak”.
What is one flooring trend to watch in 2018?
The farmhouse look continues to be the interior style in demand. It is versatile and easily suited to many homeowners’ desires. The most common flooring is of course hardwood and it is often done in a darker finish to provide a contrast with white walls. But as the trend of grays, gray blues, and gray green interiors continue, it is now also common to see a mix of stain that allows for a customizable degree of gray on the hardwood floors.
Can you tell us about a recent project you’ve been involved with that you are particularly proud of or loved working on?
I have done several remodels recently and totally enjoy helping with the transformations. I am working on a very large home remodel now that will soon turn what was a very chopped up, formal Tudor style house into an open concept home with a more family oriented feel of casual upscale comfort and functionality with all the bells and whistles!
