What is Travertine?

Travertine is a type of sedimentary limestone. It forms in hot springs and limestone caves when calcium carbonate in the ground water precipitates as the water evaporates. This forms hard stone over time as the result of temperature and pressure. Pure travertine is almost white in color, but most examples have organic and inorganic compounds naturally mixed in with them. These compounds create interesting color variations in the stone, and this feature is highly prized by those who select travertine for their floors.

For most of the time travertine has been in use as a building material it has almost exclusively come from Italy. Today you will find it sourced in locations around the world, including Spain, Guatemala, China, Hungary, Afghanistan, Turkey, and even in the US. Differences in the physical conditions at these different locations produce travertine samples that are all unique in their own ways. This is part of what makes travertine a special type of stone. Each piece is one of a kind.

You will also find variation in the way travertine is harvested. There are two main ways it is cut. A cross cut (see above) is made parallel to the bedding plane so that you get what is essentially a top-down view of the stone. This reveals the marbled pattern and natural pitting in the stone. A vein cut (see below) is made perpendicular to the bedding plane, which gives a kind of side view of the stone. This reveals the layers of material that formed over time. Each produces its own style and both result in a beautiful stone.

Why Choose Travertine?

  • Durability: Travertine, like other tile flooring, is a tough material that can stand up to years of use. When you install a tile floor you intend for it to last, and travertine will do just that. In fact, there are examples of travertine in existence today that have lasted for millennia. The Roman Colosseum is perhaps the most famous example.
  • Value: Given its desirability, travertine also has a high re-sale value. That is, if you were ever to decide to sell your home, your travertine floors will add to your home’s valuation. This makes it a smart investment for the long run.
  • Style: Travertine’s varied look enables it to work with a wide range of decors. It is generally considered an elegant and sophisticated flooring material, but it can also be incorporated into more casual designs. You really have a lot of options when it comes to working with this beautiful stone.
