Cork Flooring - ©Iriana ShiyanFloor Coverings International KC Southserving the greater Overland Park, Olathe, Leawood and surrounding areas, is all about eco-friendly options – and that includes cork flooring! Cork is a great option for anyone wanting an eco-friendly, easy to maintain, and versatile floor.

Sustainable Option

Cork is a natural product that is derived from the outer bark of the cork oak, a species of tree native to the Mediterranean region. The bark is harvested from the trees without cutting them down. About one-third of the trunk is stripped approximately every nine years. The trees are able to live until reaching full maturity, after about 150 years, and are then replaced by a young tree.

Quiet is Key

Cork has a cellular structure that absorbs sound waves. Soundwave reverberation is significantly reduced in a room with cork flooring, especially when compared to a room with denser floors like solid wood, wood laminate, and tile flooring. Sound transfer is also reduced from adjacent upper levels of the building, especially if a cork underlayment is added to the cork flooring installation.

Energy Efficient

The numerous, tiny air pockets in cork retain more surface heat and are more effective for saving energy. This makes cork more energy efficient in the winter than other types of hard surfaces such as ceramic, stone, and vinyl. With its low thermal conductivity, cork flooring is also desirable for providing thermal insulation when installed over a concrete slab.

In the summer, however, the effects of cork reverse. When airborne humidity levels rise, cork flooring has a cool, natural feeling compared to the man-made feeling of carpet. The fact is that cork flooring does not trap humidity and will create a lighter air in the room.

Cork is an excellent flooring material because although it feels hard when you touch it, it’s slightly resilient. This ability to bounce back after walking on it increases the lifespan of the flooring. In residential settings, cork flooring can last a lifetime if cleaned and maintained properly. Sweeping or vacuuming, wiping up spills and moisture immediately, and the use of walk-on mats in entryways are all that’s needed for daily care. For overall cleaning, a damp mopping will remove built-up dirt without harming the cork floor.
